Backup disk?

Post by floyd1977 »

Does anyone know what would be required to create a backup disk if it is even possible?

I started thinking, what if something happens to the mini computer down the road? Is it sufficient to just copy the contents of C:/Dutch Pinball onto a disk or backup drive?

I'm thinking CloneZilla live. At least that's what I'm going to try.

Thanks, I'll look into that. Vince (TheKorn) told me this weekend that he archived an image of his hard drive as soon as he got the kit.

So, I guess I just need to create an iso file from the C: drive and write it to a data disk as a backup?

Pretty much that's the process, yeah. Easy way is to use PING (http://ping.windowsdream.com/), though clonezilla should work fine as well. Another option is dd if you're hardcore.

I can't stress how important it is that EVERYONE get a copy of the hard drive in thier games. Mine died. I know I was going to get a copy of it but I procrastinated about it and it never happened. So I improperly turned off the game and it wouldn't restart. At first it wasn't doing anything, just a blank screen. I eventually got the bios info followed by the Bride of Pinbot 2.0 logo but that would just reboot. I took out the SSD but it wasn't recognized by my home PC. I called Vince because we're friends. He offered to send me a drive but I was having guests over and wanted it fixed that day. I asked him to send me the image of his drive. He had originally created it in dd; a Linux utility. I tried to use Clonezilla Live on my laptop to restore it but that didn't work. The clonezilla live USB drive did have the option to break out into a Linux command prompt so Vince patiently helped me restore to a new SSD. It's easy to change the serial number and the number was written on the outside of my old SSD. I backed it up with clonezilla.

I booted it and it came up fine. I updated via USB. All of my high scores were gone and settings took a little while to set but it's back and working great.

Vince really came through for me. But you need to prepare. Get Clonezilla Live, a thumb drive, and an external hard drive right away!

You'll have to unscrew the display but you can do it right from the computer in the machine.

How does one improperly shut off the game causing this?

I don't know, I turned off the wall switch and the PC didn't properly shut down. I had it happen at a show and it took me 10 minutes to get it to boot. I may have had a bad drive all along. It's always been a little cranky at starting.

If anyone does this procedure, a YouTube video of the process would be much appreciated. Some of us may not be that computer savvy.

I can do this (I have a history of making such videos) so I'm thinking of showing the process of backing it up and then restoring to a new drive as proof that it works. I bought a new SSD drive yesterday because the one I used for the emergency was pretty old. I'm sure it'll be fine for a while but who knows how long?

Let me see if I can get it started tonight.

That's because I'm hardcore! :D (Actually it's because I'm super familiar with cloning drives with dd.) Happy to help!

Basically yank the power plug out of the wall (or otherwise rudely cut the power to the game, such as a circuit breaker tripping). Happened to me at MGC, when someone literally unplugged the game. If you're turning it on/off using Scott's power controller dealie you should be fine.
