Please Please Please Fix This
Re: Please Please Please Fix This
I think this is a general problem with Pinmame, the emulation software used to run the old ROMs. It doesn't reproduce the old sounds well at all. Maybe something DP can do with sampling rate or something to improve? I would like it to sound better as well.

I'm afraid it's a bit more complicated and not really in DP's control. Take a look at this post on Pinside:

Thanks for bringing this to our attention again. As mentioned above it's not something that's easily solved as the sound in the original ROM is only 4kHz if I remember correctly and only because it's tweaked for the original sound hardware did it sound acceptable (CD quality and the BoP2.0 sounds are 44.1khz, so that's 10 times better).
But I'm talking to my PinMAME contact to see if there have been any developments lately.

Koen,
I believe that one of the problems is that PinMAME is emulating the sound hardware. It's a bit klunky, so independent of any lag, there is going to be some over-modulation and other glitches. In the past, with other MAME-related titles, there is the option of using sampled sounds as an alternative to emulating the hardware. One thing to ask your PinMAME contact is if we supplied samples for all the sounds as an alternative, could we use those instead.

Re: Please Please Please Fix This
I spent some time speaking to Jules about this in November at the Dutch Pinball party.
Clean 4bit original sound does sound awful without the DAC in the original boards improving things.
I think one potentially fruitful route is working together with PinSound and PPS to either obtain the original (not downsampled) audio masters from the WMS archives, or to digitally remaster the existing stuff. This would spread the cost and benefit all 3 parties.
For those who aren't aware, PPS and PinSound have announced that they'll be working together to provide official remasters of some WMS games. Obviously not everyone with a BoP will want a BoP 2.0, but many who wish to keep it original might jump at a PinSound with high quality audio.
Hopefully the two (three) parties can talk to each other here, and work together for the benefit of everyone.

Has there been any progress with improving the audio from the original BoP?
